Paloma was in charge of editing and sound design. In terms of editing, the main task was to update the animation edit every day and to figure out any transitions. Late into the project we added a 'Snow White'-esque opening, beginning on an extreme wide shot, cross dissolving into a mid-shot. Another editing task was to try and keep it under a minute. This was harder than it sounds as there was always times we thought a shot could be longer or the credits were too fast etc. Paloma was able to listen to all feedback we got and incorporate it to make the ending shot fun and concise.
Sound design was a big part of our piece as we had several songs throughout on 2 different instruments as well as whistling and extra sound effects. Firstly, regarding the songs, we knew the structure we wanted was sad guitar at the beginning, some back and forth in the middle, then a lively guitar/tambourine at the end. The 'sad' guitar song was an original composition by Marco Cirillo and was found online. We actually decided to use a tambourine for the 2nd instrument because it was annoying and intrusive - perfect for the story - and could be recorded at home by Nickoel's brother. So a couple rhythms were recorded and chosen by Paloma. The whistling was recorded by Tequila. Then the finale song we found was a lively guitar cover of 'Bella Ciao' by Rodrigo Yukio.
In addition to music, we wanted to make the characters feel active so with some assistance of Edoardo and Callum, she added in some sound effects to show anger/gasping etc. There was also peer feedback that there were sometimes empty pockets of silence in between the songs and main sounds. So Paloma with help from the team (namely Callum), spent the last day of the project added ambient sounds and extra sound effects for creaking chairs and surrounding birds to name a few. It definitely added life to the piece and made for a soundtrack that pulled you into the world.
