The group considered 3 main ideas:
1. 'Bamboo' Trailer - by Paloma
2. '5.A.M.' Short Film - by Paloma
3. 'Bedtime Monsters' Short Film - by Morgan
We decided to go with 5.A.M. which is a romantic short film. Mostly because it had a nice, commercially appealing premise that could make use of mostly pre-existing assets.
Premise: When a girl on the day shift, and a boy on the night shift fall for each other, they try to find a way to spend time together.
The original concept Paloma had in mind was cashiers at a 24 hour convenience store. However, the story went through several different settings as we tried to choose an environment that would need staff 24 hours. In addition to this we also had several other major factors to figure out in terms of the story. We decided to set it in a hotel lobby and changed a couple things about the story.
We had the idea to use post-it notes as a visual communicating device, which could also build up to show the passing of time.
Based on our team meeting on the first day, Paloma created a beat board for the entire story.
Feedback from several tutors showed us that the story would be too long. The main dilemma that needs to be resolved in the story is the fact that they don't have time to spend with each other because of their different shifts. One tutor said that it would take too long to show how they fix this dilemma and difficult to show visually in the way we planned. Instead, he said to have a different dilemma that gets resolved (with their romantic crush being a complimentary theme that drives the story). It should be something that can be said visually.
After developing and incorporating these changes, this is the new story:
Joe, a dreamer who never gets to live the Hawaiian fantasy of spending days in the sun surfing, works the day shift at a hotel reception. Dawn, his co-worker, works the night shift and goes surfing every morning after her shift. Joe doodles on post-it notes to pass the time about the things he wish he could do, and when Dawn sees a drawing of him surfing she makes a plan. The next day, Joe finds his post-it note has been modified - Dawn drew herself surfing next to him. Dawn reveals herself and encourages him to live life and go surfing with her.
