Animatics

We would receive feedback on the animatics almost daily, and would update it as much as possible. Some of the main changes that occurred as we developed the animatic was finding ways to shorten the action or story and making the most of visual storytelling elements like the post-it notes and postcards.

Previs

The previs was our first pass at moving from the animatic to 3D space with the cameras and characters' actions. There was a lot of difficulty in getting the right framing as we started by trying to match the animatic; we found that the scale of the characters or the environment would not easily follow the angles from the aniamaic.

Final 3D Layout

This was the last 3D layout before being handed out and passed on to each animator. Some of the framing or camera movements did change during animation stage when we would get feedback. One of the camera moves that notably went through several iterations was the time lapse shot.

Character Modification

Morgan created the looks for the characters so that they would look like they belong in our story. His main task was in texturing their uniforms and adding name tags. Then there were also some colour changes in the skin, eye, and trouser textures.

Environment & Texturing

The environment and texturing was created by several people in the group. It was mostly a simple concept as it would all takes place in just one room - the hotel lobby. Because of this, we were able to use a lot of pre-existing assets found online. The assets that had to be modelled were mostly those we couldn't find or they were specific to our design, like the front desk. We also had a lot of specific textures necessary, like the illustration art on the post cards.

Rigged Props

There were a lot of moving props or ones that would interact with the characters, so we had to rig them. Most were done with basic rigs that could control rotation and translation, but the main prop was the post-it note. We needed to be able to pose it different ways as it moved, so Paloma was able to create a useful and detailed rig.
